On January 28, 2025, the Institut Pasteur de Dakar (IPD) reached a new milestone in strengthening its international ties by welcoming a high-level delegation from Global Affairs Canada. This strategic visit reflects a shared commitment to enhancing health cooperation between the Government of Canada and IPD.
The meeting was chaired by Dr. Abdourahmane Sow, Director of Public Health at IPD, alongside the Institute’s teams. The main objective was to lay the groundwork for sustainable partnerships focused on scientific innovation and major global public health challenges.
A shared vision for 2026–2028
At the heart of the discussions, representatives from Global Affairs Canada and the Embassy of Canada to Senegal outlined the Canadian government’s current priorities in development and health. In response, IPD presented its strategic priorities for the 2026–2028 period, highlighting a strong alignment of perspectives between the two institutions.
Innovation at the center of discussions
Several major initiatives led by IPD were showcased during the visit, demonstrating the Institute’s cutting-edge expertise:

The Vaccine Research Center (VRC): Particular attention was given to the development of mRNA-based vaccines, a key technology for strengthening the continent’s health autonomy.

Biosafety and Biobanking: Presentation of rigorous programs ensuring biological safety and the management of research resources.

The CEPI Regional Laboratory: A cornerstone for responding to future epidemics.

Grand Challenges Senegal: Highlighting the innovation driven by this ambitious initiative.
Towards a strengthened partnership
This meeting helped identify priority areas for immediate collaboration. The next steps outlined during the discussions aim to consolidate a long-term partnership in support of public health in Africa and beyond.
